Our Story

In the early 2000s, Bali stood at a tipping point. Traditional farming methods — once deeply aligned with nature — were being rapidly replaced by chemical agriculture. Our land was suffering and people were losing connection to the land. The knowledge that had sustained so many generations was at risk of being forgotten.

A group of farmers, educators, and environmental stewards came together around a shared mission to restore Bali’s regenerative roots and protect their beautiful paradise while preserving local traditions. At the heart of this movement was permaculture — a way of working with the land, rather than against it.

In 2012, Tri Hita Karana Bali (THKB) was formally established as a non-profit foundation, and named after the Balinese philosophy of balance between people, planet, and spirit. THKB became home to those with a desire to protect, learn from, and grow with nature.

Our journey began in Ubud, where we transformed a family home into a living permaculture house that also serves as a centre for community learning. Volunteers from all corners of the world joined our journey — from seasoned permaculture practitioners to students and travellers simply wanting to reconnect with their food and nature. As the community grew, so did our projects, which span across land restoration, renewable energy installations, waste treatment, water harvesting and educational partnerships.

In 2024, we opened our second permaculture centre in Tabanan, allowing us to host more volunteers, offer greater workshops and deepen our impact. We believe that education is the seed of change and true restoration starts from within — by sharing our love of permaculture and spreading nature’s wisdom beyond, we can foster a flourishing future together.

From Bali to beyond, our story is still being written, and always evolving alongside nature. We invite you to be part of our journey as a partner, donor, or volunteer.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
