Fostering a sustainable and flourishing future for all
Tri Hita Karana Bali is a non-profit organisation based in Bali, Indonesia. We specialise in ecological design solutions for individuals, schools, local communities, and businesses. We also partner with governments, universities abroad, and larger corporate organisations to achieve their sustainability goals.
At Tri Hita Karana Bali, we aim to foster a sustainable and regenerative future through the principles of permaculture and nurturing the future generation of Earth stewards. We believe that a world where people and nature thrive in harmony together is about inspiration through doing, education, and collaboration through long-term partnerships.
Our mission is to preserve our beautiful Balinese agricultural landscape by creating sustainable economies and sharing sustainable practices with our communities.
The Philosophy of Tri Hita Karana
Our foundation is inspired by the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, meaning the “Three Causes of Well-Being.” It is centred on maintaining a harmonious balance between our social relationships, spirituality, and our natural world. Tri Hita Karana is a way of being that resonates deeply with today’s health and environmental movement in Bali, as it not only serves as a guiding principle for the Balinese way of life, but as a way we practice agriculture, architecture, design and business in sustainable ways. To experience Bali in an authentic way is to become deeply acquainted with these three principles, which are interwoven into many aspects of Balinese culture.
We believe in harnessing the power of permaculture and ecological principles to activate our communities and restore our planet's ecosystems for a flourishing future for generations to come.
The Story Behind Our Foundation
Tri Hita Karana Bali was founded by I Made Chakra Widia to counter the negative impact of the so-called “Green Revolution”, which was a set of initiatives sponsored by the Indonesian government during the 1950’s and 60’s to increase crop yields using harmful chemicals. Many farmers are still following unsustainable practices (i.e. using an overwhelming amount of fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides) despite living in one of the most beautiful regions of the world – where there is little awareness of the environmental impact of harmful chemicals, plastics, and non-biodegradable waste.
Who Are We?
We come from all corners of the world with different social and economic backgrounds. We are farmers, students, educators, professionals, volunteers, children, activists and change-makers with different stories, skills and perspectives. Our diversity brought together by a shared passion for building a just and sustainable world is the magic that gives life to our foundation.
