Philosophy

Tri Hita Karana – “Three Causes of Goodness”

To know Bali intimately requires that one understand the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which is fundamental to traditional Balinese belief. Tri Hita Karana is centred around maintaining a harmonious relationship with God, people and nature. It can be literally translated as the “three causes of goodness” (tri = three, hita = happiness, karana = causes).

This philosophy manifests itself in settlement and land use, arrangements, architecture, ceremonies, rituals, art and social organisations. We are reinvigorating this philosophy of harmony through permaculture principles in order to create sustainability for the island of Bali.

Our Approach

We employ permaculture principles to help individuals, farms, subaks, corporations, and governments improve their processes and ensure a circular economy that is more ecologically and economically sustainable.

Our foundation is made up of people from different parts of the world, coming from different economic and social backgrounds. We are farmers, students, educators, professionals, volunteers, children, adults, activists and change-makers.

Who We Are

Tri Hita Karana Bali was founded by I Made Chakra Widia to counter negative environmental impacts of the “Green Revolution”, which was a set of initiatives sponsored by the Indonesian government during the 1950’s and 60’s to increase crop yields using harmful chemicals and pesticides. Many farmers today are still practicing unsustainable and unhealthy methods of agriculture that relies heavily on fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides.
